Choosing the RIght Skylight for Your Tiny Home

Posted on: 28 August 2017

One of the reasons that many people choose to build their own tiny home, outside of the reduction of cost, is the ability to personalize the space. When you take on a tiny home project, you can choose every aspect of the materials used and design of the home. One option that will arise is the use of skylights. When you turn to a skylight window manufacturer for options, you may find there is more to it than simply choosing a window. Here are some of the things you should know about choosing the right skylight for your tiny home.

Weatherproofing

One of the first things you need to consider is the type of weatherproofing you want from your skylight. For example, most people use skylights in a traditional home, so the weatherproofing is typical. This means that it will be designed to help reduce a large amount of the heat or cold from getting into the home. When you are using a skylight in a tiny home, you have to consider the small area, how heat and cold will affect those areas, and keeping the home as energy efficient as possible. This means you may want to consider skylight windows with a higher UV protection level or with specialty weatherproofing layers that have higher ratings when compared to traditional window options.

Measurements

Measurements always matter when it comes to choosing windows of any kind. When you consider them for a tiny home, it becomes even more important. Remember, most tiny homes have a loft area for sleeping which drops off into the living room area. You may want to have a much smaller skylight in your sleeping area than in your living area. You also have support beams to consider and how much of the light from the skylight will contribute to your indoor lighting during the day. This can play into your energy efficiency as well.

Roof Pitch and Placement

When you are concentrating on skylights for a tiny home, one of the main considerations is the roof pitch and placement. The roof pitch could mean that some of the typical skylight window options are out of the question due to weight or even the design of the window itself. Before you choose the skylight that you want for your living space, you will need to make sure you know the roof pitch measurements for your contractor. Your skylight window manufacturer can then help you narrow down your options further.

Once you have narrowed down your options, you can then speak to your skylight window manufacturer about pricing. They can take you through ordering, processing and scheduling a delivery.
