Beyond Locking the External Doors: 4 Things Business Owners Need to Consider

Posted on: 29 August 2017

When you own a business, you probably pay a lot of attention to the locks on your external doors, but beyond that, it's critical to think of security inside the building as well. Wondering what you need?

Ideally, you should have a commercial locksmith assess the situation and point you in the right direction. In the meantime, here are some ideas to keep in mind.

1. Offices Need Their Own Locks

Ideally, all of your offices should have locks. That prevents shoppers or thieves from walking into those areas. Also, consider supporting the locks by putting in heavy duty security doors with metal frames.

Finally, put in peep holes. That way, if someone knocks on an office door, your managers can look out and see who's there. They won't accidentally open the door to a stranger and get into a compromised position.

2. Codes or Biosecurity Is Essential

To make the doors to offices or employee lounge areas even safer, you may want to use locks that work with codes or biometrics. If you rely on keys, there's always a risk of the keys getting lost. Additionally, you have to change the locks anytime an employee leaves the company.

With coded locks, you can simply change the codes as needed. Alternatively, with biometrics, you can just program in the employees that you want to have access to certain areas, and you can add or delete people as needed.

3. Safes Are Essential

Even if you have locks on all the offices, you still need safes. If you deal with a lot of cash, safes are especially essential. Luckily, a commercial locksmith can also help you set up a safe when you put the locks on your doors.

In addition to keeping your money safe, there are safes that can help with counting the money as well. That gives you an additional layer of security from internal theft in particular.

4. Storage Areas Also Need Locks

Many businesses overlook the fact that their storage areas need locks. For example, if you own a retail shop, a lot of your inventory is likely to be in a storage room. If a thief can slip in there, they can easily load up a bag or two full of merchandise before anyone even notices.

Similarly, if you own a pub or a restaurant, you may have a lot of expensive wine or food stuffs in your storage area. It's also important to protect those items with locked doors.
